An apostille certifies the authenticity of foreign documents (powers of attorney, corporate certificates) between countries party to the 1961 Hague Convention; if the origin country isn’t a party, consular legalization is required instead. The apostille doesn’t include translation — documents in another language need an official translation in Chile.

Do all countries apostille the same way?
No — the apostille only applies between countries that are party to the 1961 Hague Convention. If the document’s country of origin is not a party to the convention, consular legalization is required instead, a different and generally slower process.
Does the apostille include translation?
No. The apostille certifies the authenticity of the document and the signature of the official who issued it, but it does not translate its content. If the document isn’t in Spanish, an official translation in Chile is generally also required.
Which documents typically need an apostille?
Powers of attorney, certificates of existence and good standing of foreign companies, board minutes, and in some cases personal identification documents, depending on the specific procedure.
How far in advance should I start the process?
Since it depends on procedures in the country of origin — sometimes taking weeks — it’s worth starting the apostille process in parallel with incorporation planning, not after a signing date in Chile has already been set.
